Why You Need a ‘Sam’ in Your Health Journey (Not Just Another TikTok Hack)
My husband and I watched all 3 of The Lord of the Rings last week. I had seen them in highschool but was too busy scrolling or texting to really pay attention so it felt like I was watching them for the very first time. The foundational knowledge that I had going into these movies last week were 3 things:
Frodo looks like Harry Potter and is the hero of the movie
Dumbledore is in it
The ring goes in the fire
Like I said, it was as if I was watching them for the very first time. As we watched though, I started to be confused as to why these movies are about Frodo. Frodo and The Lord of the Rings are synonymous, but what about Sam? Sam is the other hobbit that journeyed all the way from the shire to the Mordor volcano so that Frodo could save the world, and no one remembers him. Frodo wouldn't be Frodo without Sam. IT TRULY BAFFLES ME. Sam kept Frodo focused and on the mission that he was set out to complete. Frodo couldn't overcome resistance without Sam. Frodo would have given up multiple times without Sam. And while I can talk all day about how I think the hero of the Lord of the Rings is Sam, I have a point here.
We do not make it far on a journey alone.
When bad guys come and attack in the form of sickness, an overpacked schedule, PMS, overwhelm, our own lack of belief in a better life for ourselves, the natural reaction is to give up and go back to what is comfortable. But when you have a Sam, you have someone to keep you focused. You have someone reminding you of the mission. You have someone on your team who is working with you to get to the destination. You have a way to push through the resistance and overcome it to get to the other side.
This is what health coaching does for you.
There's a reason why watching endless tik tok reels on decreasing cortisol doesn't take away your anxiety. It is because you are trying to do it alone.
Journeying together is way more efficient than walking alone.
It is also WAY more enjoyable.
All that to say, Sam is the hero for me. His loyalty and love for his friend wrecks me and he has all of my admiration. Frodo is wack.
